In 1977, a handful of companies founded the Foreign Trade Association (FTA) in Brussels with the aim of representing the foreign trade interests of European retailers, brands, and importers with European and international institutions.

In the two decades following its founding, consumers, NGOs, and other stakeholders have increasingly pressured companies to take responsibility for their social impact in the production and sale of products. How, for example, can consumers and companies know that the goods they purchase come from companies that respect workers in their supply chains? Such questions led to the launch of the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) in 2003.

BSCI is a voluntary (but not optional) system aimed at improving working conditions in supplier factories worldwide. STICKERCASE – as part of SUITSUIT International BV – has been a member of amfori BSCI (www.amfori.org) for many years and uses this system to implement continuous improvements within its own organization as well as among the (sub)suppliers with whom we work.

The BSCI system consists of a code of conduct and an auditing system. All production and assembly factories with which we work must at least endorse the BSCI code of conduct and cooperate with audits carried out by accredited auditing companies on our behalf. During these audits, it is checked whether supply chain partners have implemented the rules of conduct in their business operations.

REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. A European law that prescribes which chemical substances may and may not be used in the production of goods such as suitcases.

Every company that places products on the market in the EU must comply with REACH laws and regulations.

Unfortunately, there are still suppliers who do not take this legislation seriously. Because it requires a constant investment, both in money and attention, it is often cut back on. And that comes at the expense of the quality of the product and can have major consequences for the buyer and recipient of the product in question. So always ask for proof that a product complies with REACH laws and regulations. You will save yourself a lot of trouble.
